A Summary of 2017

Our Ratepayers Association had a very productive year.  We hosted two general meetings.  The first was with Joe Taylor, Warden of Peterborough county and Linda Kerr from Community Care.  Our second meeting featured two gentlemen who updated us on the proposed hydro project at the Buckhorn dam and a representative from MPAC explaining how property assessments and taxes are calculated.  Both were very worthwhile.  We once again did the roadside pick up yet garbage continues to accumulate.  Look for our spring roadside cleanup announcement as we plan to enlarge our area as we get more participation.

We donated $500 of you hard earned dollars to community care and a further $1,000 to the renewal project at the Buckhorn Community Centre ball diamond.  This ball diamond upgrade will make it possible to run a children’s ball league in the summer.

We owe a huge thank you to Marnie Clement who keeps us up to date as to the working of council and we use her reports to determine if there are areas we should get involved in.  Recently we have organized a protest concerning the proposed moving and centralizing of the roads depot to north of Bobcaygeon.  It looks like this is NOT going to happen and we had a hand in making the Ratepayers aware that this was in the works.  I am turning the Chairman position over Marlys Kerkman Gaines. I will continue to volunteer in the role as vice chair.

Our membership has grown very nicely this past year and we need to continue to grow as information is very hard to communicate in our very large rural area.  I wish each and every one of you a happy and safe Christmas and look forward to our spring meeting.  I know Marlys has a dandy planned!

Sincerely,

Janet CLARKSON

Urgent: Donations needed for Kids Xmas Party!

Donations are urgently needed for the Kids Christmas Party that will be held at the Buckhorn Community Centre on Friday, November 24, 2017.

This event provides local children with an opportunity to “shop” for their mom, dad and siblings in a special Secret Santa Room.  There is only a small token amount charged so they really feel like they have shopped.

Event organizers report that donations are really down this year, and they are looking for gently used items for men, women and children.  No clothing please!

Items can be dropped off at the BCC during regular operating hours by Thursday, November 23.

Spring 2017 Meeting

The next meeting of the Buckhorn and Area Ratepayers will be held at the BCC on June 6th.  Our guest speakers will be the new warden of the county  Mr. Joe Taylor. He will be speaking to the role of the county in co-operation with our twp. He will be well worth listening to.  He will be followed by a short update from Judy, the Manager of the BCC.  Many people will not know of the extensive role the BCC plays in our community.  The formal meeting will start at 7 p.m. but a short annual meeting will commence at 6:15 to hopefully get more people to take an active role or to make suggestions.  Also your memberships renewal is due and the $20. Membership fee can be dropped off at the BCC.
We are active but need more representation.  It appears that we are having an effect on the decision of the twp to build a new roads dept.  The cost of 5 million dollars is very sobering not to mention the extent of our roads network.
I don’t feel I am the best chair of this association, but I will serve tell somebody else steps up.
The Schinski’s have moved to Curve Lake.  Marnie Clement is doing an excellent job of reporting on council issues and this is very helpful.  I know some of our members are distributing her reports to other groups they are associated with.  We are very lucky to have her on board.
As previously reported the roadside clean up captured approx. 25 bags of waste and recyclables.  Well done.  We could have used more hands. In future if you wish to volunteer we will make the equipment available the week before for people to do a portion of the road at their convenience.  We would then pick up their collection.
Acting Chair,
Janet Clarkson
